At the third annual Sapphire Awards, hosted by LEDs Magazine, Osram Opto Semiconductors was honored with two category wins. Osram’s Duris P 10 platform took home the award in the Best Packaged LEDs and OLEDs category and Alexander Wilm, senior key expert for Illumination, was recognized as Illumineer of the Year for his work on the TEN° Binning.

The win marks the third award in two years for Osram Opto Semiconductors, as the PASS program was a finalist in the Tools and Test in the SSL Design category last year.

“It’s an honor to have been named as a finalist and to win the Sapphire Award,” said Brian Terao, SSL Director for Osram Opto Semiconductors. “We’re very proud of the Duris family of products and the benefits it brings to our customers and the industry.”

Recognized for its improved thermal properties and overall system cost reduction, Osram Opto Semiconductor’s Duris P 10 measures a compact 7 mm x 7 mm. The Duris P 10 package significantly simplifies luminaire design and reduces the space needed for the pc board and luminaire housing, requiring less material overall. The high lumen value reduces the number of secondary optics needed and by streamlining the handling of the luminaire in production, system costs can be reduced by as much as 50 percent.

At the heart of the Duris P 10 are four 2 mm² UX:3 chips, which are also used in the renowned Oslon family of LEDs. Compared with similarly sized ceramic packages, the lead frame technology combines improved thermal properties with excellent second board reliability.

Alexander Wilm has been with Osram Opto Semiconductors since 2004, when he started his journey in the lighting industry as an optics engineer, developing the first primary optics for LEDs for automotive head lamps. Today, his primary focus is providing technical consultation to LED customers, which are some of the world’s largest and most influential lighting manufacturers in the market. With a deep understanding of the requirements for LEDs in respect to luminaire design and applications, he has developed a detailed knowledge of the driving factors of the SSL market for today and tomorrow.

“It’s great to be named Illumineer of the Year,” said Alexander Wilm. “I’ve had the opportunity to work for a great company since I started in the business that was willing to let me pursue my passions and support innovative ideas in order to push the boundaries of what we could do with LEDs. The proposed TEN° binning may affect the complete lighting industry and will help to provide better light quality with less risk of undesired color differences.”

This year’s winners were revealed at the Sapphire Awards Gala dinner on March 1, 2017, in Anaheim, CA as the featured event of Strategies in Light, co-located with The LED Show and Lightspace California. There were more than 100 entries from 60 companies.
