Osram LEDs provide razor sharp displays
Wherever we go, we are confronted by huge video walls – in shopping malls, at train stations and in airports – all seeking our attention with short video clips, adverts, weather forecasts and the latest celebrity gossip. During the holiday season in particular, these indoor video walls provide us with much needed distraction while waiting for our flight or train. They put us in a holiday mood with films of paradise beaches, creating a sense of anticipation for the well-earned break and making the wait go a little bit quicker.

Behind these impressive video displays are two new high-tech LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors – the Displix E0808 and the Displix E1010. Thanks to their emission angle of 120°, both are ideal for use in displays. The packages of the Displix E0808 and E1010 are colored black so that the screen is completely black when not in use. Another benefit of this feature is that low gray scales in the picture can be displayed in much greater detail, which brings the films shown even more to life.
With the development of Displix E0808 and E1010, Osram Opto Semiconductors is enabling its customers to close the size gap between TFT (thin-film transistor) displays or OLED displays and classic LED displays in their portfolios. The two new LEDs combine a particularly compact footprint with outstanding performance. What’s more, the individual LEDs can be placed very close to one another (known as “fine pitch”), which results in very high resolution. Thanks to the small pitch, the packaging density of the LED package is so great that the Displix LEDs are suitable for full HD resolution displays with diagonals of around 100 inches and more. Typically, the LEDs are packed with a pitch of 1.0 to 1.2 mm for Displix E0808 and 1.2 to 2.0 mm for Displix 1010. The Displix products each consist of three chips: a red chip with a wavelength of 623 nm, a green chip (539 nm) and a blue chip (471 nm). They each have an SMT package with special resin encapsulation. In terms of their brightness, the LEDs achieve top values on the market for video walls: typical values are 58 mcd at 10 mA for red, 85 mcd at 5 mA for green and 17 mcd at 5 mA for blue.
Even in difficult situations with high levels of ambient light – for example in rooms with large areas of window glass – Displix E 0808 and E1010 deliver high luminance and excellent contrast because the black package reflects less of the ambient light.
