OSRAM LED modules and lighting control system provide the basis for visionary LED ceiling lighting in the new control center at the PCK refinery in Schwedt

PCK refinery – Schwedt, Germany

Project summary

The new control center at the PCK refinery in Schwedt is housed in an explosion-proof and therefore windowless building. In cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO), Lichtvision Design and LightLife, the company responsible for design planning and implementation, a lighting concept was developed that creates a pleasant working atmosphere for the employees even without daylight. Innovative LED modules and lighting control from Traxon and e:cue play a major part.

Project description

The PCK refinery in Schwedt/Oder turns around 12 million tonnes of crude oil into mineral oil and petrochemical products each year. The company’s new control center is located in an explosion-proof and windowless building. The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) and Lichtvision Design have therefore designed an LED ceiling lighting system which provides a pleasant working atmosphere for the employees even without daylight.

Visionary LED ceiling lighting based on scientific findings

To achieve this, LightLife developed a special video shader with which different weather patterns can be simulated via random generators. Depending on the time of day, cloudy skies with different color temperatures, brightnesses and cloud formations are generated.

Together with the Fraunhofer Institute the values were matched to one another according to the latest scientific findings to ensure optimum conditions for a 24-hour shift operation. In addition to cloudy skies, there are airplanes and birds flying across the light ceiling every now and then, and shift changes are accompanied by colorful mood lighting.

Innovative Traxon LED modules and e:cue lighting control

The 108 square meter video light ceiling comprises a total of 1724 Traxon 16 PXL Board RGB LED modules. Eight e:cue Video Micro Converters (VMCs) convert the digital video signals to e:pix control signals.
