The joy of art in Hessen. A former church is now an art gallery
OSRAM LED luminaires and light management components bathe the room and the exhibits in the perfect light
In October 2012, an art gallery in Hessen acquired a former listed church together with an annex and garden. The aim was to set up a second exhibition site. After extensive renovation work throughout the entire building and grounds, the art room was opened in 2016. Professional lighting from OSRAM, matched to the time of day and the artwork on display, creates the ideal atmosphere in the high-ceiling former church.

From a church to an art gallery
Consecrated in 1724 as a French Reformed church, it served the Catholic community as a place of worship in the 19th century and most recently spent more than 100 years as a gymnasium. In 2012, the owners of an art gallery discovered the building with its annex and garden close to the town center and realized it would make an ideal location for a second exhibition space that they were planning to create. As part of the complete renovation they installed a specially adapted lighting system from OSRAM. The enormous ceiling height of the church was a serious challenge. So too was the need to have variable lighting matched to the time of day and the exhibits on display.
Variable and efficient
To provide optimum illumination for the exhibition room under all conditions, 36 OSRAM downlights modified for PWM dimmability with a color temperature of 4,000 K were installed as well as seven Nano Liner Allegro AC XB9 DW units from OSRAM subsidiary Traxon Technologies. This highly efficient LED system for area, linear and indirect lighting can be installed in very small spaces thanks to its extra slim profile, and being capable of rotating through 180° it also offer flexible alignment. Another benefit that makes the Nano Liner ideal for an art gallery is that its Dynamic White light color can be varied between 2,700 and 6,500 K so it can be adapted to suit any time of day and any required mood.
In addition, eight Siteco CL10 MIDI wall-mounted LED luminaires provide uplight and downlight to make the gallery lighting even more versatile. Depending of the situation, users can choose to have these efficient luminaires provide uplight only, downlight only or both together. Moving lights with individually controllable color, position and brightness round off the impressive array of luminaires.
Dynamic lighting control from Traxon e:cue
The combination of the two Butler and Butler XT2 e:cue engines from Traxon Technologies provides the ideal basis for controlling the lighting in the gallery. These engines not only control the luminaires dynamically, efficiently and reliably but can also interact with control terminals and play preprogrammed light shows. The e:cue LAS Enterprise software can process up to 180 programs running simultaneously. The system also includes four 12-channel DCC drivers and four 6-channel DCC drivers, again from e:cue (Traxon). The entire installation can be controlled via an Action Pad with three wifi bases.
Tailor-made lighting for displaying art
To sum up, with the luminaires and lighting control components from OSRAM the art gallery in the former church now has a tailor-made single-source lighting system which perfectly combines efficiency and variability to create the perfect conditions for displaying art in a unique setting.
