Tailor-made lighting concept for ideal indoor climbing conditions

Indoor lighting for Big Rock Climbing wall, Milton Keynes, UK

The new Big Rock Climbing wall in Milton Keynes, UK was to receive energy-efficient, but above all glare-free and high-contrast lighting. For this project, the client turned to SITECO and its lighting expertise. In close collaboration between the client, the lighting designer, SITECO and its partner Assured Energy Solutions, a lighting system ideal for climbing was implemented using modern LED strip lighting. Illumination of the stairwells, café areas, changing rooms and all other interior spaces rounded off the project.

The plan to add a third location to its two existing ones also required climbing center operator Big Rock Climbing Ltd based in Milton Keynes to focus on a well conceived lighting concept. Key requirements for illuminating the eleven meter high space were energy efficiency and glare-free light. The light also needed to clearly bring to the fore the structure of the four main climbing sections.

Close collaboration leads to tailor-made concept

The client was impressed with SITECO’s and its partner’s consulting expertise shown as early as at the first meeting. Because out of the three lighting companies that were approached, SITECO was the only one to respond with a comprehensive design proposal including planning to meet the requirements. The timing was also a challenge because work was supposed to start 14 days later. To create a tailor-made lighting concept, SITECO worked closely with the owner and the main contractor right from the start. Since the owner named a similar project in Austria as a successful reference which SITECO had previously implemented with lighting designer Li Mei Yong from Shanghai, they included her in the planning phase.

Versatile modular system

At the climbing center, the modular Modario® LED track system is now used. Its standard DALI integration as well as the possibility of easily combining different lumen packages, lighting technologies and beam angles based on the modular principle make it easier to implement a tailor-made lighting system. Another advantage, especially in hard-to-reach areas, is the quick and simple installation of Modario® modules via external connectors and locks.

Mix of light colors

The system’s strip lighting luminaires provide pleasant glare-free, yet very bright illumination which supports concentration during climbing. What’s more, the climbing walls are highlighted particularly well by spotlights specially directed at them. To bring out their texture and at the same time further reduce glare for the climbers, the main areas of the hall are illuminated with a light color of 4,000 kelvin, but the climbing walls themselves with warmer 3,000 K. In addition, Floodlight 20 LEDs provide extra light at each end of the hall.

Well conceived lighting concept for all rooms

The lighting concept also includes the rest of the indoor climbing center. For example, in the stairwells the elegant RONDEL flat modules with an optional emergency lighting element are used. Not only do they offer a modern ultra low-profile design, but also uniform light distribution and decorative ceiling illumination. In the changing rooms, PUNCTOLED DL 200 downlights provide a pleasant diffused lighting mood with high visual comfort thanks to their wide beam characteristics and satin optics. And in the staff offices PrevaLight panels make it easier to concentrate. The only thing that remains is illuminating the facade. SITECO has already come up with a concept for that too.
